Our amazing Radio Reading Service is hosted daily by specially trained volunteers. Live broadcasts for print-handicapped individuals can be found on WUSR, 99.5 FM, The University of Scranton’s own radio station. These informative broadcasts include reading of The Times-Tribune with reports of local news, sports and agency information. Broadcasts are also accessible via Comcast’s TV Channel 21, as well as The University of Scranton’s website: www.scranton.edu.

PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS Volunteers for Vision conduct vision testing as well as elementary school education programs centered on eye safety within Lackawanna County. The Magic World of Vision is a special 3rd grade fun and informative pamphlet we print and distribute to better educate our youth about eye care and blindness prevention. The Lackawanna Branch, PAB is also proud to offer adult vision screenings and education in our office as well as at senior centers, civic clubs, health fairs and industrial sites.

The Lackawanna Branch, PAB is proud to offer an assortment of programs to our clients, including: crafts, descriptive movies, audio book library and field trips, parties and an array of cultural events. PABLET, our monthly calendar of events is available on tape or in print to keep our clients abreast of the latest PAB happenings.

Caseworkers visit blind and visually impaired people in their homes to provide adjustment and supportive counseling and to give instruction in daily living skills. Referrals are made to Blind and Visual Services, blind pension, medical assistance and other agencies when such services are needed by clients. Cassettes, talking book machines and radio receivers are provided free of charge. Arrangements are made for mobility training (cane travel) or to have a seeing eye dog. Unskilled or semi-skilled home maintenance services ensure the safety of clients and enable them to remain independent in their own homes.

CLIENT SUPPORT SERVICES Our caseworkers visit blind and visually impaired clients in the comfort of their own homes regularly in order to offer many services, including:

Many visually impaired people lead normal lives with the help of magnifying devices to aid their eyesight. We provide specially-designed magnification of all types as well as large telephone dials, talking calculators, self-threading needles, and other home care equipment.

EYE CARE & VISUAL SUPPORT CENTER
Low-vision aids as well as magnifying and home care equipment are available through the Lackawanna Branch, PAB. Computer instruction in “Zoom Text” and “Jaws”, assistive software for the visually impaired, is available to our clients by appointment. We also provide assistance to purchase eye glasses for income-eligible individuals.
